Please go through the following checks 1)Check for 5V on pin 40(VCC) and pin 31(/EA pin) 2)Check the reset circuit . 3)Since you have done the loop back test serial cable may not be a problem 4)Please check whether TX and Rx of the chip is connected properly to the Max232 circuit. On Flash Magic 1)Select Device 89V51RD2 2)Go to Options->Advanced Options ->Hardware config Uncheck [b]Use DTR to control RST[/b] By default this is always checked.SO please UNCHECK.
