Stepper motors aren't known for their high speed.
I have, at one occasion, run a stepper motot at 50k pulses/min (forgot the speed that gave). I'm assuming that the motor stalls when you try to step it faster than 300rpm - in which case you need a better drive circuit. my take is that stalls are more frequently related to bad acceleration 'algorithms' than anything else.
