I don't really understand how the transistors work, but how I think it works is that if we put voltage on the base and voltage on the collector, then if we allow the emitter to connect to ground then power will flow through the collector as well as through the base. I still don't see how that would help.

you can do it all with (e.g. Allegro) "high side drivers" and "low side drivers"
