Buy it right from a manufacturer who sells online, not even from mediating people like Arrow etc . My experience is European Companies tech support does understand what you talk about and are very cooperative .
http://www.cermetek.com/ (US company), Provides very good Tech support . They have a Modem for as low as $350 . http://www.cermetek.com/News/12-16-2008.cfm Can I hope that $350 is Monopoly money? If you mean USD, then it is a ridiculously high price. An extremely quick look showed that I as a private person can buy a tripple-band BenQ M23G module from a quite "generic" component supplier for about 450SEK which is around 56 USD or 48 EUR. If I need 10, I'm down to 51 USD, 44 EUR. I would think almost all module manufacturers should have at least one module that they can sell at less than 60 USD if you need 1 or 10 units. But that Kludge is already known to be used by Hobbyists :). But that really is a kludge - very bad documentation, and bad control. You may not be able to turn it on/off in a controlled way. It takes much more space. You may have to suffer connectors that can't handle the vibrations in a vehicle. You most probably have to power it in a sub-optimal way since it normally takes a higher voltage when fed from outside than the actual electronics needs. It may not work without a battery, and if you use it with a battery then you get a 3-year lifespan for the battery. Li-Ion batteries do not like to spend their time fully charged and at high temperatures - but you are not in control. Using a mobile phone is for a one-off experiment or for a school project. Never, never for a real project. Never ever! |
