That's a good one. I believe most 8 bit microprocessors were hardwired. From what I know about microcoding, it would have made more sense to improve it to allow variable shorter cycles instead of abandoning it.

But then again, with today's design tools, abandoning it would not have the same implications as it would have back in the 80's.
