I sent Atmel an email "Is the 89C52 processor hardwired or microcoded?" (maybe I used the wrong terminology) and here's their reply:

"We're not sure we understand your question, but we would say that the AT89C52 processor is hard-wired. It's not derived from an ASIC core or an HDL-type of circuit description."
