Here we go again. Let us try to squeeze by with something less than what is required (standard). If that gives us headaches later on so be it. The fact that something works proves NOTHING. That your fuzzy implementation happens to work in some particular case is just sheer luck. Use another signal source and it might not. If the other end requires +- 8 volts at your end of the cable - which is legal - driving with +- 5 will not work. When that happens it is so easy to blame a failure on the other end. To quote Craig "this is a professional forum", it is not professional to design something that does not adhere to the standards. I have often had a failure with non-standard signals that 'used to work' because some wire was extended or more devices connected.
