If you can get a Mouser catalog you will find a wide variety of 7-Segment displays in various colors. The green ones seem to be the brightest. The catalog also lists the luminous intensity in ucd (micro-candle) and most of the green ones give you the most bang for your ma's. Please be aware that most LED displays will wash out in direct sunlight.
