From my antique Intel Compnent Data Catalog;
8279 and 8255 are rated at 120ma max each. The 8051 specifies 125ma max and the 8751 jumps to 250ma max. If running from batteries I would strongly urge using CMOS devices. An 87C51 will only sip 20ma max. the 82c55 specifies 1 ma/Mhz and standby is only 10ua.
