The basic problem with the pic series is that it has been oversold by the marketing people,it is not intended or rather it was never meant to be used for anything other than simple control tasks.It is probably a mistake to try to port BSD to a pic.
It is NOT a risc device,despite what some will say,it has some risc features but then again so does the 8052.
I do not understand why people insist on trying to do anything complex with pic when the processor and the software tools are simply not suitable.it was meant to flash lights and drive stepper motors.
