If your not used to the complexities of RS232 and how to make it work then..

1)Download the bible on the 8051 (to ensure that your mode's and timings are correct)

2)get a copy of "The art of electronics" by Horowitz and Hill.
It contains a section on RS232 , and how to connect cables to get it working (diagrams and methodology)..
