Just a follow on message thanking all of you for your help. I have sorted out my problem and can now control the arm using the 8051 serial port via keypad. I simply found both pinouts and constructed my own cable! As a follow on I would offer advice for the FAQ. It would be handy to give both the male & female RS232 pinouts as some pins are different, which was my problem.
