I suspect you are trying to get extra RS-232 ports. Have you considered the MAXIM devices with the UART, the clock and the level shifter in one. They are SPI interfaced so you could have dozens of ports. It does seem sily to use a serial interface to a serial interface, but The entire job takes one chip per port and includes buffering.
