If you suspect the reset circuit then it probably is the culprit. Using an R/C circuit for a reset generator these days is kind of foolish. Try out a real reset generator chip that has ability to closely monitor Vcc level and get reset generated long before the power on the chip falls to levels where strange things can happen if code is still running.
