Hmm, I'm not sure about the R/W line... I have always connected
this line, perhaps it is needed for the internal timing of the display?
I also recommend using a 5K or 10K pot for the contrast so you can
adjust the contrast... once you find what contrast looks good, then
replace the pot with some resistors if you wish.

simple connection to LPT port. Also helps you make special
bit map characters.
