Hello Kai,
After I posted I realized that you might not have external triggering with your new gadget. Anyway Triggering on an oscilloscope can be a real pain if it is not stable. Two tricks I use are the 74LS221 single shot. It doesn't take much to trigger it and it will stretch the pulse so that external triggering can sense it. Another trick especially on signals above 200 MHz is to feed them into a divide by 256 and use the output to trigger the oscilloscope. It works wonders with you sanity and the trace.
