9600 baud, even parity, one stop bit, 7 data bits (I think).

Normally you'll need to put the port in 8n1 mode (8 bits, no parity and 1 stop bit).

According to the OS/2 online help the command to type is:

mode com1:9600,N,8,1

- that may work in dos also.

If I type "mode com1" on my system, I get the following output:

[C:]mode com1
baud     = 9600                   parity   = NONE
databits = 8                      stopbits = 1
TO       = OFF                    XON      = OFF
IDSR     = OFF                    ODSR     = OFF
OCTS     = OFF                    DTR      = ON
RTS      = ON                     BUFFER   = ON
