For a text book for C look at:'How to program C' by H.M.Deitel from Prentice-Hall, for a FAQ and free tutorials look at: www.programmersheaven.com, for RS-232 cable connection, uart and other stuff see: www.beyondlogic.com. For programming serial and parallel communication under win32 you should learn Windows API and thus have a look at 'Programming Windows API' by Charles Petzold from Microsoft Press.
