A microcontroller is not an abstraction that can be used in isolation from the real world. You really need to be able to drive its ports with data, kick its interrupts, drive lamps.
You don't HAVE to buy an EV board, you can make something around a DS5000 or the ATMEL/Phillips 89C51 devices that does the job. Steve |
