Anyway, i dont think it is really difficult to get back the string once you have the bit stream.
The main difficulty is the fact that usually the bar code will not be scanned at a uniform rate. Either the bar code will be moved by a human over the scanner at a varying rate or the scanner will be moved over the bar code at a varying rate. So a skinny bar may be 1X in length and then all the suddent it may be 2X. Actually, the speed variation isn't usually twice as fast or slow, but there normally is some annoying variation in speed that make the process a little trickier than it would otherwise be.
