Sorry others I cant explain this proverb.

It depends which region you are working in. Here, on my side of the world the environment is pretty exploiting. You work hard enough but get paid so little . You know why, since the end user can't afford to buy the solution. But at the same time the he can't do without the solution also. Means that the client has to hire you, you have to work for him and you have to accept the low return, happy or no happy doesn't matter :(

I would say, identify your potential competitors. Identify their shortcomings and weakness to exploit.

Always entice the client by offering some additional functions/ features to his base requirement free of cost or within the cost.
