i've changed my thinking to the 8052 MCU as it's more powerful

As previously mentioned, you do not need a powerful processor just to do a 6-digit counter!!

Remember, each BCD digit requires only four bits - so why not go for a 4-bit processor?
eg, http://www.necel.com/micro/eng.../75xl.html

You might even find this easier - as you don't have to worry about "packing" two (4-bit) BCD digits into each byte!
