Another way of entering the µ character is to hold down the ALT key and enter the digits 230 on your numeric keypad Michael Karas said:
The scheme you suggest is generally for DOS and Windows based PCs. Actually, it won't even work generally on Windows! The Alt-230 trick is for the old, MS-DOS IBM PC Extended Character Set, Codepage 437. If you selected a different Codepage, you could well get something different! Take a look at your Windows Character Map, and you'll see that the µ is Alt-0181 in Western symbol sets. Take a look at the HP LaserJet fonts, and you'll see that each Font (strictly, Typeface) has a number of different Symbol Sets, and it is the Symbol Set that defines what character is printed for a particular code - especially the "extended" codes over 127. The IBM PC Codepage 437 Symbol Set is called "10U" See http://www.hp.com/cposuppor...l#P66_3406 So, as I've already said elsewhere, the Alt-230 trick is not portable - and now you can see that it isn't even guaranteed to work on all PCs! In fact, as this is an international forum, it is quite likely that even PC users will have their PCs configured for different national Symbol Sets - so it may be quite unlikely that the Alt-230 trick will work at all for many users! |
