I personally dislike SMS (things such as cu, u, ur, l8r) but abbreviations such as IMHO and BTW don't seem nearly as offensive to me. I'm not sure why. Perhaps because they are abbreviations for multiple words rather than ugly shorthand for single words.

at least cu is shorthand of two words: see you. But, what is about ok? It is also ugly shorthand for "all correct" born with Andrew Jackson, if I remember right.
