...which is fine for devices witrh data sheets written in English, but the manuals for things like the T6963C were (originally >10 years) VERY badly translated from Japanese. Getting the display to work then was a major hacking exercise.

But we are seeing less hacking even. Plug it in switch it on, start asking questions on the net when it fails. There is never much evidence of people poking pins with oscilloscopes.
