On the matter of PCB design, maybe check these people out

They have been great to me, and if the board meets the zoompcb requirement, 7 mil trace spacing, 7 mil trace limit, and 7 mil trace to via, with 12 mil minimum hole size (I think) you can sometimes get a pair of boards for <$200. These people are good. They have caught board violations for me that my PCB tools are incapable of.

As far as parts go, I would definitely go with surface mount if you feel you are ready to make the transition. I started doing this a few years ago and have not regretted it (much). We are lucky in that respect, as we have an electronic uScope that makes assembly a breeze, and a great technician.

Breadboarding......ahh who needs it. I only do this if I'm totally clueless as to a parts functionality (which happens much less that it used to)
