The bodge shown will probably work most of the time with most PCs.
If that's good enough for you - well, fine. But if you want something that is guaranteed to work - stick with a purpose-designed IC with guaranteed performance. Apart from just the correct voltage levels, a purpose-designed IC also gives you the correct slew-rate limits, guaranteed ESD protection, etc, etc, etc... |
