the information all of you posted is so helpful

i'm not planning to use the 3-state, if i use the 3-state buffer the outputs will always be active.

16 LEDs are driven from the 8051

as Russell Bull said, the configuration of the leds will be this for each of the 16 pins

uC - Buffer - R330 ohm - LED - Vcc

i asked what happened when inputs are floating because the uC sometimes may not be there.

can the 74ls244 drive 8 LEDs or i should switch to uln2803 ?
