#71503 - RE: Seriously, now: DRAM vs SRAM
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Ashoka:
In the bygone days there were probably some applications where an 8052 design could effectively utilize a DRAM memory chips. I saw one application wherein the design needed tons of 1-bit wide memory for storing the 0/1 digitized state of a port pin signal over a very long period of time. The DRAM was connected directly to port pins and not onto the external RAM bus. Software took care of producing the DRAM's address multiplexing and RAS and CAS and CS and OE signals. The design at the time achieved a storage density that was not feasible with SRAM!

A design like that could even be done with today's types of dynamic memories but it would be more complicated becasue the interface requirements to modern types as SDRAM, SGRAM, or DDRAM are more rigorous.

This leads me to comment that the use of DRAM may still be applicable today for certain types of specialty or exotic applications. But for the general application of trying to equip an 8051 with an external XRAM data space the use of SRAM is definately what is called for!!
