Software hang up is usually due to any condition which has not been accounted for in the code. It may also be due to some hardware problems as well.

I recommend you to use a supervisor chip such as MAX1232 and strobe it with your software (using any free port pin ) so that your design is immune to brown outs and software hang ups.

If you can provide more details, somebody can point to the exact reason for your problem.
