I believe that in removing the AC plug, you removed a ground loop.

Well, I had a similar problem once. Can you throw some light on how could a ground loop be formed using a transformer.

If the transformer has a bit of leakage between primary and secondary (this is CMOS) - OR - if the GND in the circuit is connected to the ground wire.
