My 'rules' re 2 boards
No output should be a uC pin.
No input should be a uC pin.
Anything that is at another ground potential should be isolated.

My 'rule' re EMI
all signals entering or leaving the board should have a ferrite on the board such as MURATA BLM21A601FPT.
