That's probably a good assumption.

The next step is to verify that it is actually executing code - which is where a code-controlled LED comes in.

The next step is a simple "Hello, world" program to show that the serial port & RS232 transceivers are working & correctly connected.

Then he can get down to debugging his keyboard code...
