#77912 - Possibly not entirely stupid...?
Responding to: ???'s previous message

...here in Spain the Atmel's distributor seems is an 'microchip secret agent' we have a lot of problems to get a simply AT89C51ED2 for my final studies work even demanding the chip from the university teacher's email ... However Microchip send trial chips to everyone that demand one ... Anyone have a doubt that why pics are more and more used?

I can't understand Atmel and others policy.

This is just a hunch, but I wonder if Atmel's response might've been different if you'd asked for an AVR...?

The thing is, PIC is single-sourced from Microchip - so if they can get you hooked on PIC, they've got you hooked on Microchip.

8051s, on the other hand, are available from just about every semiconductor manufacturer and his dog - so they have no real guarantee that you'll stick with Atmel 8051s for your next project.
But if they could get you hooked on AVR...

Here endeth the Conspiracy Theory!
