#78172 - List of names (thread summary)
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Ijaz = miracle
Ahmed = admired/praised

Jez = My name is Jeremy which is an englisised form of Jeremiah which is an old testement Hebrew name meaning 'God has uplifted' aparently:)

james = "the supplanter" according to a baby name book, but maybe that is just a modern-day description of James, the apostle (from the Bible).

hinnant = thatcher (as in thatched roof), probably a belgium name (lots of "hinants" round charleroi), but that meaning could be suspect, too, i've only seen it once. "hennant" in old england; "hannant" in ireland?; "hinant" in Belgium (and Alsace-Lorraine?) and Detroit; "hinnant" elsewhere in the U.S. and maybe in the old Caribbean.

steve or? taylor = Crown
andy = Greek, English, Scottish: Manly, brave; from the Greek Andreas; In the Bible, Andrew is the first of the twelve apostles chosen by Jesus and the brother of Peter. Andrew is a patron saint of Greece, Scotland, and Russia." <http://www.babyzone.com/babynames...sp?ID=900>

neil = ?
raghunathan = Well in some cases names are just abstract - like for instance they can be after a dynasty in mythology. My name is exactly that - RAGHU happens to be a from a dynasty called RAGHUVAMSAM from the famous epic Ramayana.Incidentally I have nothing to do with Ramayana ! And I myself don't know what my second part NATHAN means :-(

nathan = Most Probably 'Nathan' is the derivative of the sanskrit wordf 'NATH' which means 'The lord'.

jeff post = In the circus, "jeff" is a slang word for rope. And "post" is a stick in the ground.
Prahlad = Joy. [ First Name ]
J. = My Father's Initial.
Purohit = Hindu Priest. [ Family Name ]

Joseph is a French and English name derived from the Latin (Josephus) and Greek (Iosephus) versions of the Hebrew name Yoseph, which means "He will add." In the Hebrew Torah, Joseph was the 11th son of the Jewish Patriarch Jacob, who after being sold into slavery by his brothers, was elevated to the position of Governor of Egypt, second only to Pharoah. In the New Testament Joseph is the husband of Mary. Also in the New Testament, Joseph of Arimithea was the wealthy man who gave up his tomb for Jesus to be buried in.

hebert = I can not say for certain what Hébert (pronounced A'-bear) means. It is a French name today. It might have come from Ireland as an anglicized form of Éibhear. According to Irish legend Éibhear was the name of two of the sons of Míl, Éibhear Dunn and Éibhear Finn, the first of the Gaels to conquer Ireland. However, Hebel is a Yiddish form of Abel, so I suspect that Hébert is what became of the Hebrew word heber, which means "enclave," after it was brought to France by the diaspora.
Rajkumar -> Prince
Shetgar -> Surname
Smith is the most common eng;ish sirname,comes from anglo-saxon word meaning to strike,and refered to someone who worked with wood or metal.

Bartosz was originally the name of a job, about keeping bees and making honey.

wucke = As for my surname, it probably had some original meaning in the past but it got so mangled by different clerks during my grand-grandfathers moves between different countries (I know at least 2 other members of my family with the surname spelled similarly but differently) that the meaning seems to be permanently lost.

andy (II) = I am not expert in the Greek language but i believe
Greek name Andreas should emanate from the word “andras”
(-d- pronounced like greek Delta ) that means man.Or most likely
Andreas should emanate from the ancient word “andreios” (-ei- pronounced -e- ) that means brave man..

Lambros: It emanates from the name of day of resurrection of Christ.
If pronounced with emphasized -a- is first name.
If pronounced with emphasized -o- means bright.

Sirivlis:(all -i- pronounced -e- ) Surname, it is the name of city from where come my ancestors (Silivri. They 'swap' l , r).
GEORGE m
Usage: English
Pronounced: JORJ
From the Greek name Georgios which was derived from the Greek word georgos meaning "farmer, earthworker", itself derived from the elements ge "earth" and ergon "work". Saint George was a legendary dragon slayer who was supposedly martyred in Palestine. He is the patron saint of England, Portugal and Catalonia.
