I suggest a series of app notes written by Microchip app engrs to understand the different control methods (and purpose) of AC induction motors (ACIMs). Unfortunately, none contains information about the potential "gotchas" with regenerative braking. Purposes can range from drives that simply ramp speed up and down while respecting motor limitations (so called V/F control) to precision positioning approaching dc servo performance (so called vector control). I second the comments about IGBT voltage ratings. AN887 is a good review of induction motor theory. AN900 is a good description of contol methods not including vector control.
