and you could see him applying thermal grease on the heatsink, like someone is putting butter on his bread... I like that! Yes you are very right - till a few days back my hardware support guys were doing the same thing! Now the instructions are loud and clear about the flatness of the heatsink and the quantity of paste to smear. The paste is just to fill in the voids and enhance the primary heat transfer which is by direct metal-metal contact. Even though this is a basic heat transfer issue, we ( atleast me ) overlooked the fact, that too much paste will prevent the basic metal-metal contact, till someone had to point it out.
