Just to keep this thread up to date with the latest on the evolving working solution.
Yes, this would be advantageous, as your cable is 1.5m long. The additional ground wires would act as a shield, decreasing the danger of cross coupling. I implemented this design with the added feature of attaching all grounds on the DB25 to ground (previously I had only attached one of the DB25 ground lines to ground). I didn't remove the 220 Ohm resistor. Seems to work great on the "beta" PCB I had produced and which I just finished populating and testing. Thanks for everyone's help.
