Use the 1 Wire Protocol.

Maxim/Dallas has a kit available that makes it possible to use a USB- software interface.

No need to build any hardware! Just connect the ONE-wire unique devices to the USB-device.

VERY EASY AND SIMPLE to implement WITH LOW changes that things would not work.
