I'm not sure on this, but I remember something like that... Maxim on its derivatives that can use up to 16M of program memory in "flat" mode included "extra byte" to be considered while using AJMP and LJMP, so AJMP took 2 bytes and LJMP - 3. SJMP was still 1-byte for short jumps.
