I just recently made a circuit that includes ISP for the DS89C420 and it works just as advertised with the software you cited above.

Note that Dallas claims signficant errata with respect to the loader for the DS89C420 in both the A1 and A2 revision levels:

I have used the A2 device in a prototype without experiencing the issue described in item 1 of the A2 errata sheet, but it would be prudent to look this over and consider your design carefully.

You might also want to consider migration to the DS89C430, which although it has its own set of errata, has some nice perks (i.e., in-application programming) but does not cost much more.
