Check the PC COM port and cable. Make a trivial loopback (short pins 2 and 3 on the cable's far end connector) and type something in the terminal. Do you see receiving the same characters? Now disconnect the "loopback" and type something. No characters shall be received (this to exclude "local echo" setting of the terminal program).
