Since it seems you do not have a scope, try this
1)since you are using external UART, can you try a slower clock on the non-emulated version. That, usually, bring out timing problems. (if you use the internal UART make a conditional change of the clock settings). 2) try a, say, 10k pullup (temporarily) soldered on one of the malfunctioning data lines and see if there is a difference.
