I agree with educating the users. I am even thinking of adding some code to the forum that tries to recognize un-PRE'd code and tries to automatically format it (obviously asking the user before the post is submitted whether the formatting is correct). Also, if I get into the business of adding PRE tags to posts I'd probably eventually add a feature to the website so that such messages are flagged as "PRE formatting tags added by webmaster for clarity" which would also result in a private email being sent to the poster to explain how PRE tags should be used.

As for me doing a lot of extra work, true. But it'd take about 10 seconds per post to fix and would lead to more productive threads instead of people asking for the posts to be re-posted with PRE.
