Note that RS232 is "bipolar" ie -12V to +12V, not just 0 to 12V.
(nominal voltages).

A proper RS232 transceiver gives you a lot more than just higher-voltage signals!
eg,
  • Defined input & output characteristics (impedance, capacitance, etc);

  • Short-circuit protection;

  • Slew-rate limiting;

  • ESD protection.
