#92686 - Software When Using Decoder
I am using a TI CD4514B 4-bit 4-to-16 Latch Decoder to minimize the number of port pins needed to output a logic "1" to 16 different locations. However, I am not sure how I code for this IC. Say I want to have output 4 from the 4514 send a "1" down the line. The 4514 data pins are connected to the 8051 via 4 pins on Port 0: P0.0, P0.1, P0.2 and P0.3. Would I simply set each of these Port 0 pins high as necessary? So, for a four, I would set P0.2 high, then leave the others? How do I signal that I am done setting bits to the 4514? I notice that the 4514 has a "Strobe" pin; can I guess that like an Enable this needs to be set by the 8051 when the appropriate bits are transferred? What if I need to output a 7 (requiring setting multiple bits)? Do the internal latches keep the bit settings in memory until the Strobe is enabled? Can I set the bits sequentially? Thanks for any help!
