This can easily get to be problematic. many appnoted for one derivative can be applied, sometimes with a small modification, to hundereds of derivatives. As an example there is a Philips appnote AN446 that refer to the long outdated/discontinued 87c751 which contain good code for a soft UART. This appnote would never be referred to in a scheme making the selected derivative the key to appnotes.
