Redesign your system such that its line interface isn't affected by a grounded serial link (this is obviously possible, otherwise no modem could ever work with a PC!) 2. Isolate the serial link. When I had this problem (it was years ago) we bought a few RS232 isolator modules and used them whenever we needed to plug in a PC - this obviously saves any design changes & additional costs in your system.
