Basically it sounds like an explanation of each potential external IC that you might want to connect to the 8052 on an individual basis rather than part of a huge mess of ICs in a massive schematic that you have to sort through to figure out what you do and don't need if you only want a certain functionality (as in the MAX232 in your example).
