One other thought--I don't know if this could somehow be rolled into the same idea or if it might be an additional, parallel idea, but what about "coding competitions?"

What I mean here is perhaps the competition of the week is, for the sake of example, "Write an assembly language algorithm that divides a 16-bit number in R6 and R7 by a 16-bit number in R4 and R5". Everyone could then submit their answers to the system but the answers would be hidden until the competition deadline passes. All answers would then be made visible to the public and everyone could vote on the best answer based on correct functionality, well-documented, well-structured, and efficient (code size and speed) code. No-one would know the names of the contributors of each code until after voting had closed so that everyone would score the code on the merits and not based on the author.

This could be an interesting way to see different approaches to solving the same problem and learn not only from the "best" solution but by each of the solutions that will, presumably, each have something and interesting we may not have otherwise thought of.
